How can I tell if my device is compatible?

Check out our Ask an Engineer video on compatibility as well as our growing database. If you have succesfully charged a device, please email us at info@biolitestove.com so our list can grow.

So how does this all work? Why is there a battery in here?

The BioLite CampStove uses a small internal fan to create airflow, which, in conjunction with our uniquely designed fuel chamber, creates an ultra-efficient fire with highly improved combustion.

The heat generated by the fire is converted into electricity in our Power Module which automatically recharges the lithium ion starter battery which, much like a car, kickstarts the fan at the very beginning of your fire. Surplus electricity powers a USB outlet allowing you to charge small electronic devices.

I’ve conditioned my starter battery and the blinking orange light has not gone solid – what’s wrong?

If you have charged your battery using a USB charging outlet for two to six hours, you can consider your battery successfully conditioned. If you are unable to connect the battery to a USB source, you can light a fire to condition the battery, however, it may take longer to charge a device.

See more under Tips & Troubleshooting Use

What will the BioLite CampStove charge and how quickly will it do it?

The CampStove is compatible with most devices that can be charged through a standard USB port. This includes cell phones, smartphones, MP3 players, LED flashlights, headlamps, and rechargeable battery packs, among other devices. Please note that not all manufacturer’s products may be included.

Charging times vary by device, as well as by the strength of the fire and other variables like outside temperature. For an Apple iPhone 4S (2G), 20 minutes of charging with a strong fire can provide you with 60 minutes of talk time.

It is recommended that you condition your battery before your first use for optimal performance.

Why will the HI speed on my fan not turn on?

This is normal at the beginning of your fire. The HI setting on your fan will not turn on until a hotter fire has developed as the higher speed can blow out a weak flame.

If you have been running a large flamed fire for at least ten minutes and the HI setting will still not turn on, contact BioLite.

My fire is smoking – what’s wrong?

Avoid damp/wet wood as this creates prime conditions for smoky fires. Same goes for leaves. If a twig bends instead of snaps, chances are it is from recent breakage and the internal moisture will create smoke as well.

Additionally, avoid blocking the jets in the stove and overcrowding the fuel chamber as these can prevent the fire from catching successfully.

How do I re-fuel the stove when I’m cooking with it?

Carefully lift your pot or pan, and add dry fuel as needed.

During a full burn, the CampStove can boil one liter of water in as little as 4.5 minutes. While every fire will be different, hardwoods like maple, oak, or hickory will burn longer while softer woods like fir or pine will require more feeding.

See more under Running & Use

How long does the CampStove and battery last?

The CampStove has a limited 1-year warranty, but is designed for years of use when maintained properly. When used regularly, the fire will charge the lithium ion battery for thousands of cycles of use – please contact BioLite if you think your battery needs to be changed beyond normal wear and tear.

NEW! Portable Grill
How does the Portable Grill Work?

Sitting directly on top of the BioLite CampStove burn chamber, the Fuel Intake Lid from the BioLite Portable Grill allows you to directly feed the fire while continuing to cook your food. Close the lid and the flames are spread up through the grill body. The vortex flame of the CampStove creates three temperature zones (HI, MED, LO) satisfying any typical grilling need. You can see more about the component parts here.

Can the Portable Grill be used with other fires or heat sources?

No, the BioLite Portable Grill is intended for use with the BioLite CampStove only.

Improper usage can result in damage to the product or personal injury. (don't do it!)

Is it really portable? What is the size and weight?

Yes, it's portable! With the legs folded, the BioLite Portable Grill packs down to 3.5 inches tall by 12 inches wide and weighs only 1.9 pounds. Combined with the CampStove, that puts your whole system around 4 pounds - as a frame of reference, most tabletop grills weigh anywhere from 8-20 pounds on their own, not including the charcoal or propane you'd need to carry.

Where do drippings go if I'm cooking meat?

The BioLite Portable Grill is designed to sit directly in the CampStove Fuel Chamber - thanks to the sloped Grill Body, drippings run down and burn off in CampStove fire. As with any grill, please use caution when cooking fatty foods as these can result in flareups.

Can I put small pots and pans directly on top of the Grill?

No, the BioLite Portable Grill is designed to have only food placed directly on top of the grill. Pots and pans may cause damage to the grill.

My grill isn't shiny any more - is that normal?

It is absolutely normal for discoloration to occur after using the BioLite Portable Grill. This is due to exposing the materials to extreme heat differentials; it will not affect the performance of the grill at all. To minimize oxidation, always dry the Grill thoroughly after cleaning and keep the Plastic Cover on when not in use.

How do I clean the Portable Grill?

Grill body, Flame Spreader, and Grill Grate can be cleaned with warm soap and water. Dry immediately after cleaning. If necessary, use a scouring sponge for stubborn grease. Store in dry area and keep Plastic Travel Cover on when not in use.

Starting Up/First Time Use
So how does this all work? Why is there a battery in here?

The BioLite CampStove uses a small internal fan to create air flow which in conjunction with our uniquely designed fuel chamber creates a highly efficient fire. The heat generated by the fire is converted into electricity in our Power Module- that electricity then a) recharges the lithium battery used to power the fan and b) is sent to the USB output to charge small devices.

How should I condition the battery before my first use of the CampStove?

Like a car, your BioLite CampStove contains a battery to aid in easy startup. Before first use, we recommended that you charge the battery with an external power source. Just use the double-ended USB cable included in your package to connect to a standard USB port on your laptop or a USB wall charger.

The light around the USB port will flash orange while charging. Charge your stove for 6 hours. The light on the power module may change to solid orange but your stove should be ready for initial use. If you cannot condition the battery via USB, you can light a fire in the chamber to condition the battery, but it may take longer before USB is available to charge a device.

If the stove is unused for more than six months, repeat these steps to ensure your stove’s battery is properly charged. See our instruction video or full instructions for more details.

What’s the best way to start a fire in the CampStove?

Watch our instruction video to see the CampStove in action. Just as in starting any fire, it’s important to use dry wood. If it’s recently been raining, you may want to carry a little dry wood with you to get the fire started. Loosely fill the CampStove with twigs, without blocking the jets on the side of the fuel chamber.
We recommend using firelighters, and we’ve included some inside your package. After putting some twigs in the stove, just light the firelighter on one end and let it start burning. Then place the firelighter carefully inside the fuel chamber.

If you don’t have firelighters, you can also get the fire started by placing small twig shavings, dry grass, or birch bark at the top of the stove after filling it with twigs. The smaller shavings can be lighted with a match, and will help ignite the twigs.

After lighting, wait 10 seconds, and then push the power button on the CampStove. This sets the fan to LO and starts the flow of oxygen, which will help your fire get started quickly. The fan will not operate at High Speed until the probe senses heat.

What’s the best type of wood or biomass to use in the CampStove?

It’s most important to choose wood that’s dry. Avoid wood that’s green or rotten, and use twigs that are dry enough that they snap cleanly. Twigs from hardwood trees, like oak or hickory, will burn hottest and cleanest. Softer woods like pine or fir will burn well, but the stove will require more feeding and will create more soot. We recommend avoiding leaves, as they can be smoky.

How do I use the LO and HI settings on the fan?

When starting the fire or coaxing the fire from embers, use the LO fan speed. The LO speed is also good to use when you’ve let the fire burn down for simmering. When the fire is hot enough, you’ll be able to use the HI speed. While the fan has the ability to greatly increase fire efficiency, the high setting can blow out a weak flame.

Running & Use
What type of wood should I use when the fire’s hot?

When the fire is well-established, you can begin to add larger pieces of wood. Hardwoods (birch, maple, hickory, oak, etc.) will burn longer than softwoods.

How should I position the stove if it’s windy?

If it’s windy, position the stove so the flame is blowing over the stainless steel fuel chamber rather than in the direction of the plastic power module.

How well does the CampStove work in cold or damp environments?

The CampStove works very well in the cold, because the power generated is based on the heat difference between the flame temperature and the ambient air. The CampStove can be used in damp environments and light rain, but should not be used in heavy rain, to protect the electronics inside the power module.

How long does it take to boil? How can I simmer?

The time to boil will depend on the heat of the fire you’ve built. With a typical fire, 1 liter of water can reach a boil in less than 5 minutes.

To simmer, just let the fire burn down, and push the power button to set the fan speed to LO.

How do I add wood to the fire while I’m cooking?

Carefully lift your pot or pan, and add dry fuel as needed.

What type of cookware should I use?

Choose pots and pans that are no more than 10" inches in diameter and no more than 8 pounds when fully loaded. Any metal cookware (aluminum, stainless steel, titanium) will work with your CampStove.

How can I clean pots and pans used on the CampStove?

The CampStove is designed for clean combustion, but all woods burned in the stove will create some soot. Pitchy pine will create the most, and hardwoods like maple will create the least. The best way to minimize soot is to let the fire become well-established and hot before putting on a pot. Any soot on the pot can be wiped off with a moist rag.

To make cleaning up even easier, you can use the campfire trick of soaping up the bottoms of your pans. Use a bar of soap and a little water to get your hands soapy, and then smear them on the bottom of your pot or pan before cooking. As you cook, the bottom will turn black, but will rinse off easily under water when you’re done.

How long must the CampStove burn before charging a device?

On average, it may take 5-10 minutes before it’s ready to charge. It will take a little longer if you’ve recently been charging other devices, or if you haven’t properly conditioned the battery before your first use.

What kinds of devices can I charge with the CampStove?

The CampStove is compatible with most devices that can be charged through a standard USB port. This includes cell phones, smartphones, MP3 players, LED flashlights, headlamps, and rechargeable battery packs, among other devices. Please note that not all manufacturer’s products may be included.

How long will the CampStove take to charge my device? How long does the CampStove take to charge an iPhone?

Charging times vary by device, as well as by the strength of the fire and other variables like outside temperature. For an Apple iPhone 4S (2G), 20 minutes of charging with a strong fire can provide you with 60 minutes of talk time.

What are the CampStove’s basic specs?

Weight: 2.05 pounds/935 grams
Fire Power Output (peak): 3.4 kW [LO mode], 5.5 kW [HI mode]
USB Power Output: 2W @ 5V [max continunous], 4W @ 5V [peak]

Maintenance & Care
How should I stop the fire?

Let the fire burn down to cold ash. Dig a small hole for the ashes, and pour water over them before covering with dirt.

How can I turn off the fan?

The power module will turn off automatically as the stove cools. To manually power off, hold the power button for three seconds. After manually turning the fan off, it may automatically turn back on if the stove is still hot. This protects the electronics inside the power module and ensures that embers burn down to ash.

When can I pack the power module inside the stove chamber?

Wait until the fuel chamber is cool before storing the power module inside. This is necessary to protect the plastic from heat.

How should I clean the power module and fuel chamber?

Power module: Remove the orange plastic power module from the fuel chamber and wipe it down with a damp cloth with soap and water. DO NOT submerge the power module in water or get it excessively wet.

Fuel chamber: Wipe out with a nylon brush as needed. The pot stand at the top of the fuel chamber can be wiped off with a damp cloth and dried well. The fuel chamber can also be washed in a dishwasher. Dry very thoroughly.

Where should I store the CampStove?

Store your CampStove in a cool, dry location, avoiding excessive heat. Keep out of the reach of children. If the CampStove goes unused for more than four months, we stongly recommend re-conditioning your starter battery by plugging it into your computer for 2-6 hours using the yellow USB cord provided in your box.

Is the stove repairable?

The CampStove is designed for easy maintenance and care. Please contact support@biolitestove.com for any specific maintenance or repair needs.
