Denny recently completed a series of field tests of a Biolite stove prototype in the central highlands of Guatemala. The trip provided an opportunity to test the design in a representative field environment, learn about local cooking needs, and establish contacts with organizations producing and selling stoves in the region. The tests included boiling water and preparing tortillas at altitudes ranging from 4,900 to 7,800 ft using firewood sourced through local markets and neighborhood vendors.
The trip culminated in a demonstration of the product to a rural community where families cook with several tons of purchased firewood each year. Feedback on the design concept was overwhelmingly positive and the long term fuel savings potential was well understood. While the single-pot prototype design used for the prototype is best suited to communities Asia and Africa, the feedback received on this trip indicated that the Guatemalan stove market has interest in the Biolite approach and could be approached with a two-pot variant of our design.
